A few days before the long weekend (Oct 29-Nov 1), my mom told me that she wants to go on a “staycation” with our whole family in one of the hotels here in Metro Manila. And so, I immediately looked for a good place to stay at and in one of the blogs I chanced upon, I saw Microtel by Wyndham Mall of Asia. I’m quite familiar with it as we also booked Microtel by Wyndham for our Boracay trip in December and I learned that they have many franchises around the world as well.
I read lots of blog reviews I can find online on that particular hotel until I finally decided to book it through Agoda. For the amount of only P3,499 which already includes the tax and service charge, I booked a standard non-smoking room with 2 Queen beds for just an overnight stay from October 30 to 31. Fortunately, I was still able to book this room for that price even if I only booked it a day before the actual check-in but I suggest, for anyone who wants to get this room as well for a low price, to book weeks or even months in advance as this is when promos and other discounts are offered.
Upon arriving at the hotel, you’ll immediately notice how much it stands out as it looks fairly new. I think it also has something to do with the fact that beside it is just an empty lot that is not quite pleasing to the eyes because of the rubble and other sacks of junk scattered around.
As we entered the lobby, there were quite a few people checking in as well but we only had to wait for a few minutes before we were checked in and got the access card to our room. While I was in line waiting for my turn, I heard that some guests are asked a deposit fee but I guess those are just for those without any reservations and just walked in because I was not asked for one and even got told that I can pay for the full amount upon check-out.
We got a room on the 5th floor and I immediately noticed that there are water and ice dispensers near the elevator that guests can get from for free.
When we entered the room, what instantly caught my attention was the beautiful view we got by the window. We were really hoping to get a room on the front side of the hotel as it overlooks the bay area and the amusement park with the huge white ferris wheel. The beautiful view plus the comfortable window seat was a perfect reading spot for me. There are even 2 lamps you can turn on if the natural light from outside isn’t enough.
The 2 Queen-sized beds have three big pillows each and thick blankets perfect for the cold and rainy weather that day. I suggest that you bring your house slippers when you check-in as the floor can get really cold because of the air conditioner. There’s a panel above the beds with lights installed which you can control with a switch in between the beds.
There’s a small wooden table between the beds with a phone you can use to call the front desk and the operator for assistance. There’s a fee of P15 per outgoing call if you want to make one. What I liked about this the most is the electric socket ideal for charging phones or other gadgets.
An ice bucket, a pitcher, and two glasses are available for use which you can refill anytime in the dispensers. If you need extra utensils like plates and spoons and forks, you can just call the operator and they’ll have it delivered in your room in a few minutes. There’s a small hamper available for your clothes and a small refrigerator as well.
I really liked the fact that almost all areas of the room has their own lighting system and nearby electric sockets. The vanity table and even the wardrobe have one. You can avail of their room service from their restaurant by the lobby and in-room massage services for a fee but we opted not to as they were quite expensive. There’s also a flat screen TV with cable channels you can enjoy during your whole stay.
The bathroom was spotless and spacious. There are free towels, soap, shampoo, and toilet paper. They even have a hair dryer near the sink. They also provided rugs on the floor to keep it dry.
After resting for a while in our room, we went upstairs and checked out the rooftop as we heard how beautiful it is there. Upon reaching the place, the first thing you’ll notice is how bright the whole area is. Almost everything from the floor to the walls and columns are painted white which really gives out a relaxing vibe. There are tables and chairs where the guests can lounge on a lazy afternoon while having their meals . It’s a perfect place for you to take your Instagram-worthy pictures with all those white columns and a perfectly blue sky as your background.
The place plus the view get even more stunning during the night with all the beautiful lights turned on.
Raised on a platform in the rooftop is the swimming pool. The whole area is only open from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm. The pool itself isn’t quite big so it can surely get crowded at times. There are also shower areas that guests can use.
The location of the hotel is really convenient as it is near the airport, the mall, and restaurants. If you’re someone who doesn’t like staying in their hotel room the whole day, you have lots of places to go to just a few minutes of walk away. It is very near the SM MOA Amusement Park and various bars and restaurants along the bay. There’s also a church nearby so we were able to attend mass that day as it was a Sunday.
All of the hotel staff are very accommodating and polite. We had to call the operator and front desk numerous times because of some requests and inquiries and all the time they have been nothing but helpful and kind with us. They kept the hallways clean and dry especially because there are guests who walk around wet going to their rooms after swimming in the pool on the rooftop.
There’s only one thing I didn’t quite like with my whole experience and it’s the fact that the security is a bit lacking. Anyone can go in and out the hotel without their bags being checked or being verified first if they are actually guests. But overall, we had a really enjoyable and comfortable stay at Microtel by Wyndham MOA. We didn’t experience any hassle at all from booking until check-out. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who wishes to have a well-deserved “staycation” without putting a hole in your pocket and the hassle of traveling a long distance.
